What is a keyword density checker?

A keyword density checker is a free online tool that shows how often a target keyword appears in your text. Paste an article, a blog post or a whole page draft into the box above, enter your keyword, and you get the count, the density percentage and the first and last position at once, without installing anything or creating an account.

Good keyword density does not rank a page on its own. It works best when the page itself is helpful and other sites link to it, which is why many sites pair on-page basics with link building services that earn editorial links from real publications. If you sell software, our SaaS link building service does the same for product and comparison pages, and guest posting on relevant sites is a practical way to earn those first links.

Why keyword density matters for SEO

Search engines use keywords to work out what a page is about, so a page that never mentions its target keyword can struggle to rank for it, while a page that repeats it in every sentence reads badly and can look like spam. Checking the density of a page against the pages already ranking for your keyword helps you aim for natural, balanced coverage, and pairing that with clean meta tags gives search engines a clear summary of the page.

Keyword density is only one part of ranking. A page also needs links from real publications to compete, which is where our white-label link building service comes in. And if you want to check the other on-page basics before you publish, the Word Counter and the rest of our free SEO tools are ready to use.

How to use the keyword density checker

  1. Paste or type your text. Paste your draft into the box, or type directly. The results update live, so you can see the count and density change as you write.
  2. Enter your target keyword. Type the word or phrase you want to check in the keyword box, using the exact phrase your page is targeting, for example link building.
  3. Try the sample text. Click Load sample to fill the box with example text and a sample keyword, and see how the results work.
  4. Copy or download your results. Click Copy to copy the results, or Download to save them as a text file for your records or a client report.
  5. Use the results to edit. Adjust your draft until the keyword appears naturally throughout, especially in the first 100 words, without forcing it into every sentence.

Once the density looks right, the next question is where you stand against the sites ranking above you. A competitor backlink gap analysis shows which links your rivals have that you do not, so you can close the gap page by page. If you are still choosing how to earn those links, our comparison of guest posts vs link insertions explains the trade-offs in plain language.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The Keyword Density Checker is completely free to use, with no signup, no account and no limits. Your text is checked in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored.

Density is the number of times your keyword appears, divided by the total number of words in your text, multiplied by 100. For example, a keyword that appears 3 times in 300 words has a density of 1%.

There is no single ideal density, but most guides suggest keeping a target keyword between about 1% and 2% of the total words. What matters more is that the keyword reads naturally, appears early in the text and matches what searchers expect from the page.

Both. You can enter a single word, such as seo, or a phrase, such as link building, and the tool counts every exact match of that phrase in your text. Matching is not case sensitive, so Link Building and link building count the same.

No. The Keyword Density Checker runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, saved or shared, so you can check private or client drafts safely.
