Link Building for AI Search: Getting Cited in AI Overviews
Your next customer may never see your Google ranking. They open ChatGPT or Google, ask which link building agency to hire, read the generated answer, and contact the brand it names. If your brand is not in that answer, you were never in the race.
This is the new reality of search in 2026. AI Overviews now reach 2 billion monthly users, according to Alphabet’s Q2 2025 earnings call, and ChatGPT had crossed 800 million weekly active users by October 2025. Buyers research inside AI answers, and the brands that get named win the inquiry. The question every business should be asking is simple: what makes an AI cite your brand, and what kind of link building earns those citations?
This guide answers it with published 2026 research, not guesses. It covers what AI Overviews actually cite, what the data says earns citations, what Google itself requires, and a practical playbook you can run. If you want the short version: AI citations are won with earned media coverage, broad brand mentions, and real authority, which is exactly what professional link building services are built to produce.
What AI Overviews Actually Cite
The single most important dataset on this topic comes from Muck Rack’s “What Is AI Reading?” analysis, published in May 2026. It examined more than 25 million cited links across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, spanning 17 industries. Three findings stand out.
First, earned media dominates. 84 percent of all AI citations came from earned media coverage. Paid and advertorial content accounted for 0.3 percent. Journalism alone made up 27 percent of cited sources. The pattern held across three editions of the study going back to July 2025, with earned media ranging from 82 to 89 percent.
Second, AI assistants cite constantly. ChatGPT includes sources in 96 percent of its responses, averaging 5 citations. Gemini cites in 82 percent, averaging 8. Claude cites in 55 percent, averaging 13.
Third, the winners are real publications. Axios ranked among ChatGPT’s top three journalism domains across 13 of 17 industries.
The implication is direct. AI answers are built on the open web’s editorial layer: news sites, industry publications, and authoritative content. A brand that is covered, quoted, and referenced across that layer gets cited. A brand that exists only on its own website does not. This is why digital PR has moved from a nice extra to the core of AI era link building. Editorial placements are no longer just links. They are the raw material AI answers are written from.
What the Data Says Earns Citations
Two large studies measured which brand signals correlate with being mentioned in AI answers. Both point the same way.
Ahrefs: mentions beat raw link counts
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands with a Domain Rating above 40, measuring Spearman correlations between brand signals and brand mentions across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews. The results, published in December 2025 and updated in August 2026:
- Branded web mentions correlated at 0.709 with AI Mode visibility, 0.664 with AI Overviews, and 0.656 with ChatGPT. These were among the strongest signals in the study.
- YouTube mentions correlated at about 0.737, the single strongest factor measured.
- Branded anchor text, the brand name used as link anchor, correlated at 0.628 on AI Mode.
- Link metrics such as raw backlink counts and URL rating showed, in Ahrefs’ words, “very weak correlations” with AI visibility.
- Content volume, measured as number of site pages, correlated at about 0.194, essentially no relationship.
Ahrefs is explicit that correlation is not causation, and adds a useful nuance: ChatGPT is the most accessible entry point for emerging brands, while AI Mode rewards established brands most. But the direction is clear. Being mentioned across many sites matters more for AI visibility than accumulating raw links. As the study puts it, it is not enough to build tons of links for volume’s sake. What matters most is getting mentioned across a broad scope of sites.
Semrush: authority thresholds matter
Semrush ran a study of 1,000 domains with Kevin Indig, tracking AI mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity. Its findings add an important qualifier:
- Authority Score correlated strongly with AI mentions: Pearson 0.65, Spearman 0.57. There appears to be an authority threshold effect.
- Nofollow links correlated essentially identically to follow links: Pearson 0.340 versus 0.334, Spearman 0.509 versus 0.504. For AI visibility, the follow attribute barely matters.
- Image links outperformed text links: Pearson 0.415 versus 0.334.
Read the two studies together and the picture sharpens. Raw link volume does little for AI citations. What works is authority plus breadth of mentions: being a known, trusted entity that many sites reference. That is a brand building outcome, and links are one of the main ways to build it. Our guide to DR, DA and traffic explains why authority scores behave this way.
Google’s Own Rules for AI Visibility
Google published official guidance on optimizing for its generative AI features in 2026. The key points, as reported across multiple analyses:
- There is no separate AI ranking system. AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in Google’s core search ranking and quality systems. Standard SEO still applies.
- Eligibility is simple: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. No additional technical requirements exist.
- You do not need llms.txt, AI specific text files, or special structured data to be included. Google says these have no effect.
- Both features use query fan out: they issue multiple related searches across subtopics, showing a wider and more diverse set of sources than classic results. A page can be cited for a sub question the user never typed.
- Citations are selected at passage level. The specific passage that most directly answers the query gets chosen. One analysis found that 44.2 percent of LLM citations come from the first 30 percent of page content, so clear early answers matter.
- Spam policies apply. In May 2026 Google clarified that all Search spam policies, including scaled content abuse and site reputation abuse, cover generative AI responses.
Two practical consequences follow. First, anything that gets you ranking in classic search also feeds AI citations, because the same systems choose the sources. Second, manipulative shortcuts are policed in AI answers exactly as they are in organic results.
Why Links Still Matter for AI Search
A lazy reading of the data says links are dead and only mentions count. That reading is wrong, for three reasons.
First, Semrush found that overall site authority correlates strongly with AI mentions. Authority is built over years, and editorial backlinks remain one of its main inputs. The links may not correlate directly with citations, but they build the authority that citations ride on.
Second, Ahrefs found that branded anchor text correlates strongly with AI visibility, reaching 0.628 on AI Mode. Branded anchors sit at the intersection of brand popularity and link authority: people linking to you while using your brand name. That is a link and a mention at the same time, and it is exactly what editorial placements deliver.
Third, the Muck Rack data shows that the cited sources are overwhelmingly editorial publications. Every one of those citations began as a placement: a journalist or editor choosing to reference a brand. The tactics that earn those placements, outreach, digital PR, guest contributions, expert commentary, are link building tactics. The comparison of guest posts, link insertions and digital PR shows which tactic earns editorial coverage most reliably.
In short: stop chasing link counts, start chasing the placements that make you famous enough to be cited.
The Playbook: Six Moves That Earn AI Citations
1. Earn editorial coverage on the sites AI already cites
Muck Rack’s data tells you where to aim: journalism and earned media. Digital PR campaigns that land real stories on news and industry sites put your brand inside the citation pool. One story on a widely cited outlet can generate more AI visibility than a hundred low quality links, because AI models draw from the editorial layer first.
2. Get mentioned across many domains, not just linked
Ahrefs’ core finding is breadth of mentions. Pursue placements that name your brand even when they do not link: expert quotes, podcast appearances, conference coverage, award shortlists, data studies that journalists cite. Unlinked mentions still feed the brand signals that correlate with AI visibility.
3. Build a YouTube presence
YouTube mentions were the single strongest correlate in the Ahrefs study at about 0.737. Video transcripts, reviews, interviews, and explainers that mention your brand feed the signal most associated with AI citations. For most B2B brands this channel is completely uncontested.
4. Write passage ready content
Since AI Overviews cite passages, structure key pages so the direct answer sits early and clearly. Put the definition, the number, or the recommendation in the first third of the page, in plain language, under a clear heading. The 44.2 percent finding on early content placement is a strong hint about how citation selection works.
5. Keep your site crawlable by the right bots
AI Overviews and AI Mode are fed by ordinary Googlebot crawling, not by the separate Google Extended control, which governs Gemini training data only. One outside analysis found that 92.3 percent of top news sites blocking Google Extended still appeared in AI citations. For ChatGPT search visibility, the control that matters is OAI SearchBot: OpenAI states that sites opting out of it will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. Audit your robots.txt so you are not accidentally invisible to the crawlers that feed the answers.
6. Earn branded anchor text
When you earn links, the anchor text matters more than it used to. A link with your brand name as the anchor feeds both the link graph and the branded mention signal. Expert commentary, founder interviews, and original research naturally earn branded anchors. Generic directory links do not.
What Does Not Work in 2026
- llms.txt as a strategy. Google states it has no effect on Search or AI Overviews, and one measurement found 97 percent of llms.txt files received zero traffic in May 2026. It is not a lever.
- Paid placements disguised as editorial. Muck Rack found paid and advertorial content makes up 0.3 percent of AI citations. Buying your way into answers does not work.
- Scaled low quality content. Google’s May 2026 clarification means spam policies apply to AI responses. Content farms built for AI visibility are policed like any other spam.
- Blocking AI crawlers out of fear, then wondering why you are invisible. Understand which control affects which surface before you touch robots.txt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need llms.txt to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google’s official guidance states that llms.txt has no effect on Search rankings or AI Overviews, and no AI crawler has claimed to read the file. One 2026 measurement found 97 percent of llms.txt files received zero traffic. Focus on being indexed, snippet eligible, and widely mentioned instead.
Do backlinks still matter for AI search visibility?
Indirectly but importantly. Raw backlink counts correlate very weakly with AI citations in the Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands. But site authority correlates strongly in the Semrush study of 1,000 domains, and branded anchor text correlates strongly with AI visibility. Links build the authority and the branded mentions that AI systems respond to.
What type of content gets cited most in AI answers?
Earned editorial content. Muck Rack’s May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million AI citations found 84 percent came from earned media, with journalism alone at 27 percent, while paid and advertorial content made up 0.3 percent. Original research, expert commentary, and newsworthy stories earn this coverage.
Can a small brand get cited in AI Overviews?
Yes. Ahrefs found that ChatGPT is the most accessible entry point for emerging brands, while Google’s AI Mode rewards established brands most. A focused campaign of editorial placements, expert quotes, and YouTube mentions can build citation worthy visibility without enterprise scale budgets.
Do nofollow links help with AI visibility?
The Semrush study found nofollow links correlate with AI mentions essentially identically to follow links. For AI citations, being referenced on an authoritative page matters far more than the link attribute.
Why is my competitor cited in AI answers but I am not?
Most likely a mention gap, not a link gap. Check how often each brand is mentioned across the web, including unlinked mentions, YouTube, and press coverage. The Ahrefs data suggests branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664 to 0.709, far above raw link metrics. Close the mention gap with editorial placements.
The Bottom Line
AI search did not kill link building. It changed what a good link is for. The placements that win in 2026 are the ones that make your brand known: editorial coverage on cited publications, mentions across many domains, branded anchors, and a YouTube footprint. Those same placements still move classic rankings, because Google’s AI answers are rooted in its core ranking systems.
